Flattening Bumps With a Yard Roller

There are several basic tools needed to successfully care for a lawn. Lawnmowers, string trimmers and fertilizer are a few of these. Basic tools can most often be enough to keep a lawn green and healthy. However, there are times when unexpected things will crop up that require a more specialized kind of tool to treat. The soil that your lawn grows from provides all of the essentials that your grass needs to grow. For this reason it is important to care for it well. There are times when the ground can become uneven and bumpy. In this case, a lawn roller can come in handy.

A yard can become bumpy for a variety of reasons. The most common problem is when a home builder does not flatten out the ground completely before laying seed. They may have done this for aesthetic reasons, but hills in a yard can cause water to flow to the lowest elevation, leaving the hill tops dry. Water that accumulates in the yard can cause the grass to become smothered, killing it. Unfortunately a large hill must be removed with a small tractor shovel. After the bulk has been removed, a garden roller can be used to flatten it out.

Small burrowing creatures can also cause lawn bumps. These are the easiest types of bumps to flatten. After removing the creatures and shoveling the bulk of the mound away, a garden roller can be used to flatten the area out. These rollers consist of a large plastic drum that is smooth on the surface. The drum gets filled with water when you want to use it, making it very heavy. Using the handles, the roller is pushed over uneven surfaces to flatten them out. This process does not harm the grass if done infrequently. Actually, some people like to use a roller on their grass to make it look smoother.

Finished making your lawn look fresh and healthy? Light it up with some outdoor pole lighting.

If done too often, the roller can compact the soil. Compacted soil prevents water from reaching the roots, so only use the roller when needed. The plastic drum can be varied in weight by adding or removing water. Sand can also be used to fill the roller. When unfilled, these rollers are quite light weight and easy to manage. If pushing a roller around bothers you, there are models available that can be attached to garden tractors and pulled around.
