  3. Decorative contact lenses can be worn to create the impression of dilated pupils, cloudy eyes for zombie movies, or any number of decorations to the eye for innumerable applications, both for the big-screen and personal use.
  4. Initially, contact lenses were formed from glass. They caused horrible eye irritation in some due to a lack of oxygen. Thank science for the breathable soft lenses used everywhere today.
  5. Intraocular lenses are lenses implanted within the eye to permanently improve vision. The first operation was performed on February 8th in 1950 by Harold Ridley FRS.
  6. The bionic contact lens is being developed to provide those who use them with a virtual display. This promises to be useful for the future, including for the purpose of helping the blind, all the way to the video game industry. The lenses have the form of a normal contact lens, but with miniature electronic circuits and lights to create the virtual display.

As you can see, they’ve been around a while but only now have they really reached their prime.
